LOONEYNESS

In his book Last of the Moe Haircuts, Bill Flanagan sets out to document "the influence of the Three Stooges on Twentieth-Century Culture." Saying that it's time for us all to acknowledge the enormous debt we owe to the universal genius of the Three Stooges, Bill argues that great figures from Nixon (think "bumbling plumbers") to the Beatles (haircuts) and even the Pope (Curly--> Joe--> Curly Joe, John--> Paul--> John Paul) were influenced by The Stooges—and that this provides the only logical explanation for this world of ours.

We have concluded that Bill is absolutely correct. But Bill can't POSSIBLY give The Stooges credit for EVERYTHING now, can he? Of course not. So it is with this thought in mind that we have created this page where we shall document people, places and things that we believe may owe some belated gratitude to UNCLE LOONEY. Or anything else we happen upon that just flat out reminds us of UNCLE LOONEY. This page will grow as we uncover more items, and if you have or know of any, please send us photos and details.

Does Uncle Looney have a town named after him?

Uncle Looney's Parents? No disrespect intended but we just couldn't resist.

The sign says Looney's Ferry dates back to 1742 but we don't believe it. Rather, we think they meant 1942 and suspect that Uncle Looney was the Captain prior to becoming a television show host in 1956.

Uncle Looney was EVERYWHERE. As kids, we always wondered why his initials were on every appliance and lamp cord in the house.

Prior to doing his television show, Uncle Looney had his own brand of coffee, made in his cabin, which he sold in California.

According to rumor, Uncle Looney once was the captain of a Mississippi river boat, which is now commemorated by this state fair attraction.

Was Uncle Looney running a tire service in his spare time?

Despite his obviously southern mannerisms, there are some who insist that Uncle Looney came here from Ireland and operated a pub on the side, under his original name.
